Announcement: Wasteland Sydney Satellite Projects – Beaconsfield

satellitegreen

Wasteland Sydney is happy to announce a new project: Wasteland Sydney Satellites: Wasteland Satellite Beaconsfield As mentioned earlier http://wasteland-twinning.net/blog/fenced-off/  the Wasteland in Surry Hills will be inaccessible for the next two years. In order to reflect on the fast changeing cityscape of Sydney I have nominated the first sibling wasteland to the Albion St land. The first wasteland satellite is in the tiny inner-city suburb of Beaconsfield. It is located ... more »

Fenced Off

fenced view

Wasteland Sydney is fenced off. Fenced off for at least 2 more years. 2 years of being entry and exit point for the Sydney East Cable Tunnel project. I can view the development through the fence and felt a bit disheartened at first. No, it was actually shocking news as the developers had told me that the land would be accessible this year. Blergh. Here are a few pictures from ... more »

HS2 = Future Wastelands?

HS2

As I’ve argued in recent posts, wastelands aren’t simply made by accident – they’re produced by political economy. This excellent piece at Jones the Planner persuasively argues that Britain’s High Speed 2 will (among other things) result in more city centre wastelands.

Creativity, Capital and Commons in the Contemporary City, Part 2

creative quarter

This is the second part of a (slightly) edited version of a talk I gave to the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice at the University of Nottingham back in January. The first part – which covers the history of the site – is here, but they can be read as standalone pieces.  …then as farce According to the recently released Nottingham Growth Plan, the city ’stands at the threshold ... more »

Creativity Capital and Commons in the Contemporary City: The Eastside Island, Pt. 1

Archive docs - 04

This is a very slightly edited version of a talk I gave to the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice’s seminar series back in January. This is the first part of the talk, which focusses on the way in which economic forces have shaped the ecology and geography of a large wasteland on the edge of Nottingham city centre. The second part, which I’ll post later this week, ... more »

The Tunnel Under the City Mythod

The Tunnel Under the City Myth

This myth, by wasteland researcher Adj Marshall in collaboration with Anna Links, Kate Haughey &  Lily Benedict, applies artistic, musical and public humanities perspectives to the concept of site specific storytelling.

Wastelands Past, Present and Future?

ARH Update03

With the tourist season heating up there have been some crucial developments concerning the Koepi Brache. A new owner has taken the lease for the site and our adjoining studio building. This reflects the proposed developments for the remaining plots of real estate along Koepenicker Strasse which is being framed as a ‘party mile’ littered with luxury flats. As many of the apartment buildings in the surrounding area near completion ... more »

Making Place

making place

A guest text by Richard Houguez on the first of Nottingham’s Wasteland Conversations: Making Place On reflection, it was fortunate it was to be a sunny day – land always seems to shimmer with possibilities in this kind of light. But hold back that word, u-t-o-p-i-a, first something can be heard. We trod grass a little while, moving between the shadows of the BioCity buildings, along the wore-in desire lines ... more »

Artist’s Impression: Wasteland Twinning Nottingham Needs You!

Artists Impression original

Wasteland Twinning Nottingham NeedsYou! On Saturday 27th April, Wasteland Twinning Nottingham is producing an ambitious photographic work on ‘The Island’ wasteland, between Sneinton and Nottingham city centre. The work is a recreation of an artist’s impression of the unrealised Hopkin’s masterplan (above), which would have seen the space developed with hotels, restaurants, flats and offices. We’re going to ask people to stand on the wasteland in the same positions as those on ... more »
