A lecture-performance by myself, Alex Head, Flotation is an attempt to de-lineate from fixed or normative habits of knowledge creation fostered by algorithmic systems of communication and online exchange. The Adata Island is a wasteland site in Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
With the coming award of European Capital of Culture for 2019, the Adata is under increasing speculative interest and attention from multiple parties. The island is a rich habitat for hundreds, perhaps thousands of wildlife species and is used informally by locals.
The question of Adata’s development is therefore also a question of how the city of Plovdiv frames itself and for whom. As an artist the situation also raises issues about how knowledge is produced for and around the site and it’s wider context.
Wasteland Twinning would like to thank Stefka Tsaneva, Genika Baycheva, Vanya Grozdanova, Gina Kafedjian, Stanislava Tasheva and Svetlana Kuyumdzhieva, head curator of the European Capital of Culture 2019.
