Providence as a Post Industrial City is filled with "wastelands" of various kinds. In preparation for my research I needed to narrow my focus of Providence wastelands to a specific site. I used the method of photo collage to assist me in selecting which site would become my focus of study. In the process of taking and creating collages from the photographs taken at each site, I was able to create the list of criteria that would ultimately support my selection of a single site for study. Above are photo collages from 3 wastelands I considered for study. The criteria for selection which emerged from this artistic engagement with Providence wasteland sites included the following.

  • Location
  • Accessibility
  • Challenging historical narrative
  • Diversity of community engagement
  • Potential for  WT network collaboration
  • Personal Investment
  • Compatibility with research methods
  • Fundability

After much consideration the site located just off Gano Street was selected for study.
