The 2nd Edition of the Wasteland Disco Squad visited the Amsterdam Houthavens, the city’s old timber harbour. Besides the cargo ships that still berth at the dock’s landing stages, the Houthavens is also a popular landing place for houseboats. Due to the port’s redevelopment, however, many houseboats were relocated in the last year.
Originally, the event should have taken place next to the former entrance to the houseboats that docked alongside the Pontsteiger’s western edge. Because of exceedingly bad weather, however, we were forced to seek shelter under the building formerly used to regulate port activities.
In the near future, the banks that touch the northwestern waters of the Houthaven will be redevelopped and covered with buildings, eventually growing into a residential area.
The program consisted of a musical presentation of Ehsan Fardjadniya and Yaniv Schonveld: together, they demonstrated how to use and play a bike as an instrument. After a short concert of the Dutch Band Monsterest, Jeffrey Babcock presented four short films that were screened by means of Ehsan Fardjadniya’s Pirate Cinema construction: up to three people pedal backwards to move forwards, and pedal forwards to charge screening-, and sound-systems. In-between screenings number two and three, Jef Ponyboy Sinbad Vladimir Andrea from Cirque Karbonkel set himself on fire.
